The State Committee meeting is less than a week away and the participants in the main races are still up in the air. The Committee will vote on Kansas National Committeeman and National Committeewoman. Insider expects a few surprise twists before the ballots are counted.
The race for National Committeewoman appears to be between current Committeewoman Alicia Salisbury and KRA President Dr. Helen Van Etten. Insider wouldn't rule out the entrance of another conservative woman at the last minute, but for now Van Etten seems to be the clear cut favorite. Salisbury hasn't done much to offend party members like her Committeeman counterpart has done, nor has she accomplished much during her tenure. Her lack of buy in to the new course of the Kansas Republican Party will cost her support from the State Committee. Dr. Van Etten, has worked hard to raise money for the Party and she has contributed herself. Some may view her work as KRA President as a conflict, but her commitment to real Republican principles is unquestioned.
On the National Committeeman side there is one declared candidate, one likely to run and two past National Committeemen who have not publicly said they will not run again. Mike Pompeo, seems intent on proving that he deserves a place in the KS GOP hierarchy. Insider knows that State Senator Tim Huelskamp has been heavily recruited to run, but has not made an official announcement, one way or the other. Such a race would not only be a rerun of last year's 2nd and 3rd place vote getters in the Party Chair race, it will once again pit the 1st and 4th district, with people in both districts still bitter from last year's losses.
If that seems a little too easy, neither current National Committeeman Steve Cloud, nor immediate past Committeeman Dwight Sutherland have announced that they will not be seeking reelection. The announcement of one or both could shake things up a bit next Saturday.
Next....other matters for the State Committee to consider.

If another conservative woman jumps in the race, that could really make things interesting. It might split the conservative vote and hand the victory to Alicia. The suspense is killing me!
Conservatives have the votes; there's no suspense. KRA has done nothing for the party; it's broke and dysfunctional. Van Etten is just another KRA flack. Pompeo would actually offer some slim hope of bringing a sane conservative to the table. Huelscamp is unpleasant and disliked (and not respected) by nearly all his peers in the legislature. Nobody is urging him to run. This post is basically a fairy tale. Conservatives will simply take the posts because they have the votes; the main speaker on Saturday night is a nobody and an embarrasment to a party that can't get (or afford?) a good speaker. Kansas Days a big yawn.
Just Say No to Sanity
OH NOES! Thompson is out. Who is Kobach going to endorse now?
good question...
a recent article (couple weeks ago) said Kobach wasn't endorsing anyone.
who is Senator Brownback and Roberts supporting?
Brownback is campaigning for Mccain we know
Roberts?
OMG! The state party is in shambles, a fraction of just a few years ago. Look at the money. The party is not doing anything but issue press releases. The party continues to get smaller.
The party could be run at this level out of someone's basement. All you'd need is an internet hookup. Hey "Insider", how much is the state party behind on rent again? And how much is the staff being paid? And how much have they fundraised to support Republican candidates this year?
That's what I thought.
It surprises me that the Ks Rep Party and the Ks Rep assembly hasn't merged. Same people/associations.
What's that sound?????
Oh, yeah, the majority of the R's leaving.
Haven't you noticed? They merged last year.
sniff sniff, boohoo.
guess what, I hear the party will be around this weekend.
this is our chance to corner them and challenge their running of the office.
is everyone up for that? lets call 'em out
Go get'em tgirl!
