Summer Fun

Summer means lemonade, picnics, mowing the yard and the summer meeting of the KS GOP State Committee.

This meeting will be a departure from past years with a two day event, sort of a mini-Kansas Days. Friday the 27th will offer two training sessions for county officers. No word yet on who will be conducting the training. The various standing committees will also be meeting Friday afternoon.

The Party staff has allotted three hours on Saturday for the State Committee meeting, but that may not be enough time for all the business to be conducted:

Up for discussion is how delegates will be selected for the '08 RNC Convention and a new plan for developing platform revisions. No concrete proposals have been laid out, but committee members should expect to see something prior to the meeting. These issues, especially the selection of RNC delegates, will likely be the subject of extended debate.

The Rules Committee has suggested a number of changes that will also be up for consideration. The most contentious change seems to be a proposed increase of State Committee members to 50 from each Congressional district. The last increase was opposed by many members concerned about the burden on members driving from Southwest and Southeast Kansas.

In addition to the housekeeping issues, there will undoubtedly be several resolutions floated during the meeting. Thus far, the only one to surface is Nancy Hanahan's perennial 'lets get rid of Steve Cloud' resolution. The RNC governs the National Committeemen and Committeewomen and the resolution is stated as a bylaw change, so it's probably out of order anyway. She does promise that the State Committee will learn about "something so egregious that he must be removed". Insider is not sure if she is refering to Steve Cloud's fundraising letter for KTRM or the $1000 personal contribution he made to the State Party back in April.

Why are people on state committee upset with Steve Cloud? I realize that he's a moderate. But, Cloud is one of the moderates who has stayed with GOP thru thick and thin. Many of other Johnson County moderates are now Democrats.

The state committee shouldn't get rough with Cloud. All you'll do is push his people over to Democrat party. Cloud won't get reelected as committeeman. He knows that. It's best to let Cloud finish his term. He'll move on soon enough. The state party just needs for him to leave on good terms.

Hi Steve nice to hear from you

How much money have Nancy Hanihan and the KRA people on the state party board contributed to the party? Probably not the $1,000 that Cloud contributed combined. The state party is broke. What the state party does at this point is irrelevant. Not a single officeholder or candidate views them as anything but a nuisance/problem. KRA and KTRM have completely usurped their functions. Steve Cloud will complete his term; if it were only as easy to get rid of Nancy Hanihan. Oh well, seems like old age fuddy-duddyness is taking care of that.

Cloud remains a state party GOP donor because he truly is a Republican. He fights like hell in the primary ... but he always backs the nominee in the end.

In the last election at least 45% of registered Republicans voted for at least one Democrat.

So, say whatever you want about Cloud ... but he's better than 45% of registered Republicans in that he always backs the GOP candidate.

The conservatives don't need to worry about guys like Cloud. They need to worry about those 45% who are voting to elect Democrats.

conservatives don't like cloud cause they're jealous of his wealth and power

they only wish they could be as successful and effective at changing votes

This whole argument takes a rather absurd shape in Kansas.

Party over people is not a mantra we should follow.

People are upset because Cloud sent out a letter on KTRM letterhead telling people not to give money to the state party.

The KTRM letter did NOT tell people not to contribute to the state party. It urged them to contribute to KTRM. Conservatives should be mad at Tihart and Brownback as well then. People in the 4th have been told to contribute to individual campaigns not to state party. Also, Brownback's staff is staying aloof from party as well.

the letter says the following:

"In light of the KRA takeover (of the Kansas GOP), we would like for you to consider making your major contribution to the KTRM."

Earlier in the letter is says:

"In the past, you have been an active supporter of the Kansas Republican Party through the Grand Club Program."

If that isn't saying give to ktrm don't give to the gop - I don't know what is...

check your facts.

this organization is doing more harm than good.

oh, and steve cloud signed that letter.

What party?

How is Steve Cloud and KTRM doing more harm than good?

The conservatives ran the party for 3 years, and we've ended up with mass defections. We put forth worst challenger candidate in history with Barnett-Wagle. And, we saw Kline flushed away. I'd say that the conservatives are really the ones who are doing more harm than good. Cloud and KTRM are trying to save the GOP from itself.

the only thing that will save this party is a leader who can unite the party while still standing firm on republican principles. that leader must also be willing and ABLE to raise money to compete with the democrats. for some reason a very small majority of the people on the state committee didn't get that and left us with the current thoroughly inept administration.

Since the party is being run by David Miller protoges Kris VanMeteren and Jarod Suhn no one should be surprised that its just the same song, second verse.
